‘Lord of the Rings’ Writer Philippa Boyens to Pen Disney’s ‘Young Merlin’

“Lord of the Rings” screenwriter Philippa Boyens has signed on to pen another wizard’s tale.

Best known for her writing and producing duties on the “LOTR” movies, “King Kong” and “The Lovely Bones,” Boyens will provide the script for “Young Merlin,” Disney’s next retake on a beloved side character. “Young Merlin” will have as its stake not the future of King Arthur’s realm, but of magic of itself.

Boyens’ film will be based on T.A. Barron’s “The Merlin Saga.” A separate Disney project will adapt “The Sword in the Stone” into a live-action feature.

Here’s the synopsis for the first book in “The Merlin Saga”:

Washed up on the shores of ancient Wales, the boy had no home, no memory and no name… he was determined to find all three.

This best-selling series follows the adventures and training of young Merlin on the mist-shrouded isle of Fincayra, an enchanted land between earth and sky that is being destroyed by blight. With this land’s inhabitants to guide him, the boy will learn that Fincayra’s fate and his own quest are strangely interwined.

He is destined to become the greatest wizard of all time — known to all as Merlin.
