“Lovecraft Country’s” Ihuoma Ofordire to Pen “Cleopatra Jones” Reboot for Warner Bros. & Macro

"Cleopatra Jones"

Cleopatra Jones is returning to the big screen. Deadline confirms a reboot of the classic Blaxploitation pic is in the works at Warner Bros. and Macro with “Lovecraft Country” scribe Ihuoma Ofordire set to write the project. “Lovecraft Country” showrunner Misha Green, who was previously attached to pen the new “Cleopatra Jones,” is producing.

1973’s “Cleopatra Jones” and 1975’s “Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold” are Blaxploitation female empowerment movies featuring Tamara Dobson as an undercover government agent and supermodel.

Ofordire and Green were nominated for the WGA Award for New Series for “Lovecraft Country.” The latter’s upcoming slate includes writing and directing the sequel for the Alicia Vikander-led “Tomb Raider” and re-teaming with “Lovecraft” and “Underground” collaborator Jurnee Smollett on the Amazon action pic “Fuel.”

Ofordire wrote the “Lovecraft” episode “Jig-a-Bobo,” which examines the aftermath of Emmett Till’s murder and the legacy of racist stereotypes. “Snowfall,” “Life, Love, & Hollywood,” and the short “Furtive” are also among Ofordire’s writing and acting credits.

“If you look at the numbers, the numbers are disheartening. If you are a black woman or a person of color trying to break into the industry, it is disheartening. I think things are changing and the dialogue is there. The conversation is happening, but there is not nearly enough being done to make sure that our stories are being expressed and told from people who resonate with those stories,” Ofordire has said. “[Women of color] have things to say, because we have our own experiences. We have our own tragedies that we want to express and show to the world. And a lot of times, in everyday life, black women are marginalized and silenced, or ignored completely in America’s society. Our voices, our stories are deeply needed in this space.”
