After the successes of female-led action films like “Lucy,” “Gravity,” “Spy” and the “Hunger Games” and “Divergent” franchises, we’ve been waiting for Hollywood to do the obvious and greenlight a lot more of the same. (Give the people what they want, studios.)
We may slowly be getting there. Jennifer Lawrence’s space adventure “Passengers” and Scarlett Johansson’s anime reboot “Ghost in the Shell” are on their way, and joining it soon may be “Sarah,” a “grounded” sci-fi thriller in the vein of “Lucy.” (The Johansson vehicle earned $458.8 million worldwide on a $40 million budget.)
“Hunger Games” studio Lionsgate has acquired a female-driven spec script that is being described as a “character-driven property.” Not much more is known at this time, but we look forward to seeing some more ass-kicking women, hopefully soon.
