Writer, playwright, producer, and actress Luisa Leschin has been named as this year’s recipient of the Imagen Awards’ annual Norman Lear Writer’s Award, Variety confirms.
The honor “celebrates leaders in the entertainment world who have worked toward increasing diversity in all aspects of the industry.” “One Day at a Time” co-creator Gloria Calderon Kellett is a previous honoree.
Leschin most recently served as an exec producer on “Mr. Iglesias,” a Netflix comedy series about a high school teacher employed by his alma mater.
“Luisa Leschin’s work with her-highly successful play, ‘Latins Anonymous,’ to her success as co-executive producer for beloved shows such as ‘George Lopez,’ ‘Everybody Hates Chris,’ ‘East Los High,’ and now ‘Mr. Iglesias,’ serve as examples of her creative talent and leadership,” said Helen Hernandez, president and founder of the Imagen Foundation.
Leschin added, “Norman Lear is a towering legend in the entertainment industry, having created some of Hollywood’s most ground-breaking sitcoms. He has inspired every writer to think beyond the norm and is someone I have always looked up to. I’m beyond honored.”
According to her official website, Leschin was “driven to write better parts for all women” after playing “Latina gang girls, Latina hookers, Latina maids, and of course Latina pregnant women.” “ER,” “Beverly Hills, 90210,” and “Hill Street Blues” are among her acting credits.
Now in its 34th year, the Annual Imagen Awards will take place August 10 in Beverly Hills.
