Lulu Wang Boards Nicole Kidman Amazon Series “The Expatriates”

Wang: Elias Roman

Lulu Wang’s saying farewell to her breakout year and hello to 2020 with a new project. The “Farewell” writer-director will follow up the Golden Globe-nominated film by making her small-screen debut. She’s joined “The Expatriates,” an original Amazon series exec produced by Nicole Kidman. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news.

Based on Janice Y.K. Lee’s 2016 novel, “The Expatriates” centers on a close-knit expatriate community in Hong Kong. Wang has signed on as a writer and exec producer, and will direct multiple episodes. Alice Bell (“Offspring”) is also attached to write.

The drama has a straight-to-series order at Amazon and is the result of Kidman’s first-look deal with the studio.

“When I first read Janice Lee’s diasporic novel, I was immediately drawn to the rich characters and the global yet intimate exploration of life in modern Hong Kong,” said Wang. “I’m thrilled to be working with Nicole Kidman and Amazon, whose commitment to bold, nuanced storytelling make them the perfect partners to translate this atmospheric story to screen.”

Kidman added, “Lulu is a tremendously gifted writer and director. Like so many others, I was deeply moved by her work on ‘The Farewell,’ and I’m thrilled she’s going to help us bring ‘The Expatriates’ to life onscreen.”

Wang’s upcoming slate also includes sci-fi feature “Children of the New World,” which she’ll write and direct. She made her feature debut with 2014’s “Posthumous.” Earlier this week Awkwafina-starrer “The Farewell” received Golden Globe nods for Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language and Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Awkwafina). Based on an actual lie, the pic tells the story of a family who decides to lie to their grandmother about her terminal diagnosis.

When we asked Wang about the best advice she’s received, she said, “to write every day — anything, for any amount of time. Just put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard and be consistent.”
