Lupita Nyong’o is headed to the stage.
The Oscar-winning actress will make her New York stage debut in playwright Danai Gurira’s “Eclipsed,” about a quartet of women held captive by rebels during the Liberian civil war. Liesl Tommy will direct.
A NY Times review of the play at Yale Repertory Theater described the work as “depict[ing] the harsh realities of women’s
lives in a strife-torn African country with both a clear eye and a
palpable empathy.”
Public Theater’s Artistic Director Oskar Eustis added that “Eclipsed” is a “feminist reading” of the Liberian civil war that is “both heart-breaking
and profoundly life-affirming.”
Previews will begin on September 29 at the Public Theater, and the production will run from October 14 to November 8.
Nyong’o will next appear on screen in “Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force
Awakens” (out December 18). She is currently filming “Queen of Katwe,”
Mira Nair’s tale of a Ugandan chess champion.
Gurira costars on AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and has won an Obie Award for her earlier play “In the Continuum.”
