Lynn Shelton’s eighth feature has received a release date. Improv-based comedy “Sword of Trust” will open in New York July 12 and LA July 19, a press release announced.
Penned by Shelton and Mike O’Brien, the pic centers on Cynthia (Jillian Bell) and Mary (Michaela Watkins). The former’s deceased grandfather left her one item: an antique sword he believed proved that the South won the Civil War. The pair try to sell the weapon to grouchy pawnshop owner (Marc Maron) and his sidekick (Jon Bass), who find out there’s a black market for this type of war paraphernalia. All four eventually team up to auction the sword off to the highest bidder.
“Sword of Trust” made its world premiere at SXSW in March and will open the Seattle International Film Festival later this month.
It was recently announced that Shelton will be stepping behind the camera for Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington’s upcoming Hulu series “Little Fires Everywhere.” She’ll will direct four of the Celeste Ng adaptation’s eight episodes as well as exec produce. The drama depicts the “intertwined fates of the picture-perfect Richardson family and an enigmatic mother and daughter who upend their lives.”
Shelton’s TV credits include “GLOW,” “Fresh Off the Boat,” and “The Good Place.” “Outside In,” “Laggies,” and “Humpday” are among her features.
