Lynn Shelton’s “Sword of Trust” Snagged by IFC Films

"Sword of Trust"

After a well-received world premiere at SXSW earlier this month Lynn Shelton’s latest has secured distribution. IFC Films acquired North American rights to “Sword of Trust,” Deadline confirms.

Set for a summer theatrical release, the comedy centers on Cynthia (Jillian Bell) and Mary (Michaela Watkins), the former of whom has inherited one item from her deceased grandfather: an antique sword he believed proved that the South won the Civil War.

“The two attempt to unload the object to a curmudgeonly pawnshop owner, Mel (Marc Maron), and his man-child sidekick, Nathaniel (Jon Bass),” the source summarizes. “When Mel and Nathaniel discover there’s a black market for the relic, the two pairs join forces to sell this rarefied “prover item” to the highest bidder, kicking off a wild journey into the depths of conspiracy theory and Southern disillusionment.” Shelton and Mike O’ Brien penned the script, and the former is also among “Sword of Trust’s” producers.

Shelton’s last film, 2017’s “Outside In,” tells the story of an ex-con (Jay Duplass)  who reconnects with his former high school teacher (Edie Falco). The prolific indie filmmaker’s other features include “Laggies” and “Humpday.” Episodes of “GLOW,” “Love,” and “Fresh Off the Boat” are among her many TV directing credits.

When asked what advice she has for other female filmmakers, Shelton told us, “The same advice I have for all directors: Don’t wait for permission to tell your story. Just go out and make it. You really have no excuse not to at this point,” she emphasized.
