If you’re interested in seeing a film about facing adversity and coming out stronger on the other side— and who isn’t right now? — you’re in luck. According to Deadline, Entertainment Studio Motion Pictures has snagged worldwide distribution rights to Lysa Heslov’s directorial debut, “Served Like a Girl.” The inspirational documentary follows a group of female veterans competing for the title of Ms. Veteran America and chronicles the hardships they face as they re-enter civilian life.
“I’m very passionate about female-empowering movies,” Heslov told us. “And I loved the idea of the story of these female veterans’ lives couched in the Ms. Veteran America competition. It allowed us to show levity and humor while telling heartbreaking stories,” she explained.
A theatrical release is being planned for mid-August with a digital release to follow.
“We’re very excited to work with Lysa Heslov on her directorial debut,” commented Byron Allen. “This very important film sheds light on the post-deployment experience of female soldiers who are real American heroes, and unfortunately overlooked.”
When we asked Heslov what she’d like audiences leaving the theater to think about she said, “I pray they leave feeling hope, and feeling like they have learned something they didn’t previously know while being entertained,” adding, “I hope our audience loves these women as much as I do.”
“Served Like a Girl’s” soundtrack’s first single, “Dancing Through the Wreckage,” is performed by Pat Benatar. Penned by Benatar, Linda Perry, and Neil Giraldo, the song will be released September 1.
If you want to see another female-led and woman-directed movie about women in the military, you can check out Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s “Megan Leavey,” now in theaters. The drama is based on a true story and centers on the relationship between a young Marine corporal (Kate Mara, “House of Cards”) and her military combat dog.
