Maggie Kiley to Direct Pilot for “Riverdale” Spin-Off “Katy Keene”

Kiley: AFI

Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) is leaving Riverdale and her gig singing at Le Bonne Nuit behind to pursue her dreams in New York City, and Maggie Kiley will be behind the camera capturing all the excitement. Having previously directed three episodes of “Riverdale” and two of quasi spin-off “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” Kiley has been tapped to direct the pilot of yet another “Riverdale” spin-off, ““Katy Keene.” Variety broke the news.

“Katy Keene” was ordered to pilot by The CW last week. Based on the Archie Comics character of the same name, it “follows the lives and loves of four iconic Archie Comics characters — including fashion legend-to-be Katy Keene — as they chase their twenty-something dreams in New York City. This musical dramedy chronicles the origins and struggles of four aspiring artists trying to make it on Broadway, on the runway, and in the recording studio,” the source notes. “Riverdale” star Murray will reprise her role as Josie in the project, which is set a few years into the future.

The first mentee of Ryan Murphy’s HALF program to be assigned an episode of television to direct, Kiley’s other directing credits include “Scream Queens,” ““9-1-1,” and “American Horror Story: Cult.” She made her feature directorial debut with 2014’s “Brightest Star.” She also helmed features “Dial a Prayer” and “Caught.”

“My advice for any director is to keep directing,” Kiley told us in 2015. “Keep finding ways to tell stories. It is easy to get sedentary or to make a list of all of the things standing in your way. If you keep making work, you will keep growing, and ultimately you will be much happier. And specifically for women,” the alum of the AFI Directing Workshop for Women, added, “I would say, don’t wait for the perfect time to have a family! I have two young children, and they make my artistic life that much more rich because I have a full —  if sometimes exhausting — life.”
