Maitreyi Ramakrishnan Lands Leading Role in Mindy Kaling’s Coming-of-Age Netflix Comedy

Ramakrishnan and Kaling

Mindy Kaling has found her Mindy Kaling. The “Late Night” star and writer’s semi-autobiographical Netflix series has cast its lead following a worldwide open casting call. Maitreyi Ramakrishnan of Toronto will make her onscreen debut in the untitled project, Deadline reports. Kaling’s online casting call led to over 15,000 responses.

Inspired by Kaling’s own childhood, which she’s written extensively about in her books “Why Not Me?” and “Is Everyone Having Fun Without Me?”, the comedy tells the story of Dev, “a modern-day first generation Indian American teenage girl. She is an overachieving high school sophomore who has a short fuse that gets her into difficult situations,” according to the source.

Kaling is re-teaming with “Mindy Project” co-exec producer Lang Fisher on the project. The pair are credited as co-creators, co-writers, and exec producers.

A trailer recently dropped for “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” an upcoming Hulu series co-created by Kaling. Based on the rom-com feature of the same name, the show stars Nathalie Emmanuel (“Game of Thrones”) as Maya, a communications director for a New York senatorial campaign who heads abroad to reconnect with her college BFFs and attend one of their weddings.

“Late Night” is in theaters now. The Nisha Ganatra-directed comedy centers on a veteran late-night host (Emma Thompson) who hires her first female writer (Kaling). “Ocean’s 8” and “A Wrinkle in Time” are among Kaling’s recent acting credits.
