“Making a Murderer” Creators Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos Adapting New TV Series with George Clooney

The female filmmakers behind Netflix’s hit true crime series “Making Murderer” will team up with George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures for a new TV project, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Making a Murderer” creators Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos will adapt “America’s Most Admired Lawbreaker,” based on the a series of articles by journalist Steven Brill. Screenwriter Nicki Paluga (“Perception,” “Resurrection”) will also be on board for the script writing, while the duo directs.

According to THR, the series will follow “the true story of a venerable pharmaceutical company that created a powerful drug and marketed it aggressively to children and the elderly while allegedly manipulating and hiding data about its side effects. The drug company was investigated and agreed to pay more than $2 billion in penalties and settlements but made a reported $30 billion in sales of the drug worldwide.”

In an interview with Women and Hollywood, Ricciardi and Demos gave other female filmmakers the advice of, “Take up the space you need to do your best work,” and noted that they’ve been incorrectly discounted as having little experience.

Under Clooney and Heslov’s deal, THR says, the two will create a scripted and unscripted drama and comedy series for cable and streaming outlets.
