The filmmakers behind Netflix hit “Making a Murderer” released a statement on Friday addressing the new developments in the case they profiled in the 10-part series.
According to Variety, the series’ co-subject, Brendan Dassey, has had his conviction “overturned by a federal judge in Teresa Halbach’s murder case. Dassey had been sentenced to 41 years in prison on charges of first-degree intentional homicide, second-degree sexual assault, and mutilation of a corpse in the Manitowoc County, Wisc. case.”
As a result of the news, filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos released a statement saying, “Today there was a major development for the subjects in our story and this recent news shows the criminal justice system at work. As we have done for the past 10 years, we will continue to document the story as it unfolds, and follow it wherever it may lead.”
It was recently announced that “Making a Murderer” would be getting a second season. When we reported the news last month, we said for audiences to expect the next installment to “provide an in-depth look at the high-stakes post-conviction process, as well as, the emotional toll the process takes on all involved. The episodes will offer exclusive access to Avery’s new lawyer Kathleen Zellner and Dassey’s legal team, led by Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin, as well as intimate access to the families and characters close to the case.”
No word yet on when Season 2 will premiere, but there’s no doubt the new installments will include these recent developments.
