Marcia Kimpton’s award-winning directorial debut has found a home. Freestyle Digital Media acquired domestic rights to “Bardo Blues,” a semi-autobiographical drama inspired by her brother’s struggles with mental health. Deadline confirmed the deal.
Slated to hit theaters and digital May 3, the Thailand-set pic sees Jack (Stephen McClintic) struggling “to learn the truth about the mother that abandoned him and his own reason for existing,” the source hints.
May is Mental Illness Awareness month.
“’Bardo Blues’ will have audiences question their journey through life even with some of the greatest obstacles, such as mental illness,” said Kimpton, who is donating 10 percent of the film’s revenue to brain illness research.
Kimpton won Best Director at last year’s La Femme Film Festival for “Bardo Blues,” which also received the best film award at the Amsterdam International Filmmaker Festival, the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards, and Canada’s Yes Let’s Make a Film.
Up next for Kimpton is “My Reality,” a comedy about a woman with her own reality show. In addition to writing and directing the project, she’s also starring, exec producing, and editing.
