Margot Robbie is one step closer to bringing Tonya Harding’s life story to the big screen. Variety reports that Miramax has secured the U.S. distributions rights to “I, Tonya,” a comedy about the controversial Olympic figure skater starring the “Suicide Squad” actress. Robbie is also one of the producers on the project.
Written by Steven Rogers (“Stepmom”) and directed by Craig Gillespie (“Lars and the Real Girl”), the film focuses on Harding and her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly’s attack on figure skater Nancy Kerrigan in 1994. The incident made international headlines.
Robbie is producing “I, Tonya” with Tom Ackerley through LuckyChap, their production company. Bryan Unkeless (“The Hunger Games”) and Rogers are also serving as producers. Rosanne Korenberg is set to oversee the project for Miramax.
“The script is unbelievable,” Robbie said in a statement. “It’s unlike anything I’ve read before and I know Craig’s approach with the material and the characters will be executed brilliantly. Tom and I at LuckyChap are so grateful to partner with Bryan for what will hopefully be the first of many jobs together.”
The script landed on 2016’s Black List. Hopefully “I, Tonya” doesn’t just play the story for laughs. When the iconic pop culture moment is rehashed, most overlook Harding’s allegations of her ex-husband’s abuse. Harding has claimed that the attack was his idea, and she didn’t report his plan to the police because she was worried he’d try to kill her if she tried.
Back in September, Robbie signed a first look deal with Warner Bros. She has a number of projects in the works, including a “Suicide Squad” spinoff for her character Harley Quinn and other female-villains of the DC Comics universe, “Queen of the Air,” in which she’ll play a trapeze artist, and “Beautiful Things,” a thriller set in a zoo.
Robbie has said that she tried to put her own spin on her portrayal of Jane in this year’s “Tarzan.” She was “determined not to play the damsel.” “I’ve never wanted to play the damsel in distress,” Robbie shared, “and she’s anything but. She’s really, really feisty, [and] incredibly capable. She’s a really fiery character and that’s what I was excited about.” Robbie was adamant that Jane fight back whenever possible and perform stunts.
“I, Tonya” will offer Robbie the opportunity to take on another fiery character, and the portrayal may lead to awards attention, especially considering the buzz the script has been getting.
