Another woman-centric international series is in the works at Netflix. Production on “Unorthodox,” a miniseries inspired by Deborah Feldman’s best-selling memoir, has kicked off in Berlin, Deadline confirms. Maria Schrader (“Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe”) is directing and Shira Haas (“The Zookeeper’s Wife”) is starring.
From writers Anna Winger (“Deutschland 83”) and Alexa Karolinski (“Oma & Bella”), “Unorthodox” sees a young Jewish woman leaving New York, and an arranged marriage, and moving to Berlin on her own. Schrader describes the miniseries as an exploration of “female emancipation, identity, and sexuality through the prism of a unique young woman’s experience.”
Winger is executive producing “Unorthodox,” and the project is the first from her new Studio Airlift production company.
Haas, whose credits include Natalie Portman’s “A Tale of Love and Darkness” and “Mary Magdalene,” said she’s “beyond excited to take part in this unique and beautifully written TV series about a strong woman trying to find her voice against all odds.”
Among Netflix’s other upcoming international productions is “AlRawabi School for Girls,” a Middle Eastern high school drama from an all-women cast and crew hailing from creators Tina Shomali and Shirin Kamal.
Schrader’s “Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe” won the European Film Awards’ Audience prize. She previously helmed “Love Life” and co-directed “The Giraffe.” Also an actress, Schrader starred in the latter.. Her more recent on-screen credits include “Fortitude,” “Deutschland 83,” and “Deutschland 86.”
When we asked Schrader for her advice for women directors, she told us,”Cast your team members yourself. If the presence of someone around is discomforting, it might harm your artistic freedom. Your own doubts are enough to carry: You don’t need anyone else’s mistrust.”
