Maria Schrader’s Berlin Winner “I’m Your Man” Goes to Bleecker Street

"I'm Your Man"

The Emmy-winning director of “Unorthodox’s” latest feature is heading stateside. Bleecker Street scored U.S. rights to Maria Schrader’s “I’m Your Man.” The dramatic comedy just premiered at the Berlinale, where it landed a Silver Bear for leading performance for Maren Eggert. Variety reports that the sci-fi story will be released in theaters later this year with a VOD release to follow.

“I’m Your Man” sees Eggert playing Alma, “a scientist coerced into participating in an extraordinary study in order to obtain research funds for her work. For three weeks, she has to live with a humanoid robot tailored to her character and needs, whose artificial intelligence is designed to be the perfect life partner for her. Enter Tom (Dan Stevens), a machine in human form in a class of its own, created solely to make her happy,” the source details.

“Maria has created such a funny and touching story of love and connection that one questions what it means to be human,” said Andrew Karpen, CEO of Bleecker Street. “Maren and Dan are sure to be this year’s most romantic modern couple.”

Schrader, who wrote the script with Jan Schomburg, added, “This was a labor of love for all involved and we are excited American audiences will get to discover these characters we fell in love with while making the film, so brilliantly embodied by Maren Eggert and Dan Stevens.”

Last year Schrader won the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special for “Unorthodox,” a critically acclaimed Netflix hit about a Jewish woman living in an ultra-Orthodox community in Brooklyn who leaves her arranged marriage and escapes to Berlin. Her feature credits include “Love Life” and “Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe.”
