Maria Schrader may be adding an Oscar to her awards collection. The Emmy-winning “Unorthodox” director’s latest feature, sci-fi rom-com “I’m Your Man,” has been chosen to represent Germany in the Best International Film category at the 2022 Academy Awards. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news.
Written by Schrader and Jan Schomburg, the film tells the story of a scientist who is pressured to take extreme measures to fund her research. Alma (Maren Eggert, “Tatort”) is persuaded to participate in a three-week study that will see her living with Tom (Dan Stevens, “Legion”), a humanoid robot tailor-made to be the perfect life partner for her.
Last year Schrader won the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special for “Unorthodox,” a critically acclaimed Netflix hit about a Jewish woman living in an ultra-Orthodox community in Brooklyn who leaves her arranged marriage and escapes to Berlin. Her feature credits include “Love Life” and “Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe.” Also an actress, Schrader won the Berlinale’s 1999 Silver Berlin Bear along with co-star Juliane Köhler for “Aimée & Jaguar.” The pair also won German Film Awards for their performances in the romance.
“I’m Your Man” is currently screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. The fest concludes September 18.
