Marianne Elliott and Helen Mirren Win at Olivier Awards

nullThis year’s Olivier Awards winners, Britian’s prestigious awards for excellence in theatre, were announced on Sunday in London. Some new changes for the awards this year included a new voting system–instead of a panel of independent judges, the 153 members of the Society of London Theatres voted for the winners and this year’s awards were broadcast on television for the first time.

Women won some of the biggest awards this year with Marianne Elliott taking home the Best Director prize for her direction of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which also won Best Play. Helen Mirren won for The Audience, which had her reprising her role as Queen Elizabeth II. Mirren beat out some other amazing women in the category including Kristen Scott Thomas and Billie Piper.
