Marisa Tomei to Play Gloria Steinem in HBO Movie About the Founding of Ms. Magazine

Just days after signing a producing deal with HBO, Marisa Tomei has announced her first project with the premium cable network: a biopic miniseries of Gloria Steinem, focusing on the 1971 founding of Ms. Magazine.

Kathy Najimy will co-star as former Congresswoman Bella Abzug, described by Deadline as Steinem’s close friend during those heady days of the second wave of feminism. “Ms.,” which Steinem is still involved with as a consultant, will also highlight the ordinary lives changed by the magazine.

“I realized as a journalist that there really was nothing for women to read that was controlled by women, and this caused me along with a number of other women to start Ms.,” explained Steinem previously. The feminist icon co-founded the publication with Letty Cottin Pogrebin, Mary Thom, Patricia Carbine, Joanne Edgar, Nina Finkelstein, and Mary Peacock.

Tomei and Najimy will serve as executive producer, as will George Clooney.

HBO earlier aired the 2011 Steinem documentary “Gloria in Her Own Words,” which is still available on demand via HBO Go.

First wave feminist history will be told at the movies on the other side of the Atlantic this year too, when Sarah Gavron’s film “Suffragette,” starring Carey Mulligan and Meryl Streep, debuts on Sep. 11, 2015.
