Mariska Hargitay is working on a documentary, slated to shoot within the next two months, about the backlog of untested rape kits in this country. The project has a producer but they are currently looking for a director.
In June, Hargitay penned a column with Kym Worthy for The Huffington Post about the nationwide backlog of rape kits.
Simply put, the backlog allows rapists to get away with their crimes and, in many cases, to rape again. We cannot know the exact size of the backlog
because few jurisdictions count or track their untested kits, but the federal government estimates that there are hundreds of thousands of
untested rape kits in police and crime lab storage facilities throughout the United States.
According to the New York Post, Hargitay was overheard at a dinner explaining the project and it’s importance.
When you don’t test a rape kit, it sends the message that’s it’s not a serious crime, and I’m beyond outraged.
Hargitay has always been a huge supporter of women’s rights. It’s great to see her turn this outrage into creating a project that will bring more information about untested rape kits into the public eye.
