Marsai Martin is expanding her producing resume. The “Black-ish” star, who made history as the youngest person ever to executive produce a major studio feature with 2019’s “Little,” is currently shopping an unscripted series about trailblazing Black women with ITV America’s Sirens Media. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news.
Tentatively titled “Baddies,” the project is being developed and produced by Martin’s Genius Entertainment banner. If “Baddies” finds a home, it will mark Marsai’s first producing credit on a series. According to THR, the potential series “aims to blend [Martin’s] curiosity and affinity for pop culture while highlighting previously unsung Black women from the worlds of sports, entertainment, politics, and innovation.”
“Black women have always contributed to American culture,” said Martin. “They’ve just never gotten the recognition. This show is a fun way of letting people know how dope we are.”
Sirens President Jessica Sebastian-Dayeh added, “Our team continues to be blown away by Marsai on multiple levels. She’s a creative force of nature and an important voice in our culture, and aside from her obvious talents on camera, is a very deft and thoughtful executive behind the scenes. We’re proud to partner with her and Genius on this series that will shed light on vital stories in imaginative and unexpected fashion.”
Martin plays Diane/Dolly on “Black-ish,” which will return for its seventh season on ABC October 21. She starred alongside Issa Rae in “Little” in addition to exec producing the Tina Gordon comedy. In 2019 she signed a first-look deal with Universal.
