Marsai Martin has lined up her next project. The “Black-ish” and “Little” actress will star in and produce “Amari and the Night Brothers,” a pic based on B.B. Alston’s upcoming book. Universal scored the rights in a bidding war, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Expected to hit shelves in January 2021, not much is known about “Amari and the Night Brothers'” story. THR confirms, however, that it is “a middle-grade contemporary real-world fantasy centered on a black girl who goes on a journey in which she discovers her hidden powers.”
Martin, who is under a first-look deal with Universal, is set to produce via her and Josh Martin’s Genius Productions. Oscar nominee Don Cheadle is also among the film’s producers. Universal’s Sara Scott and Christine Sun will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.
No word on a writer or director yet.
You can catch Martin in theaters now as a high-powered tech exec who wakes up back in her 13-year-old body in “Little.” Tina Gordon Chism’s Universal comedy has scored over $40.5 million at the domestic box office. Martin also served as exec producer.
She portrays younger daughter Diane on ABC sitcom “Black-ish,” which wrapped up its fifth season last week. It will return for a sixth this fall. Martin’s other credits include “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “Fun Mom Dinner.”
