Marvel Comics Announces All-Female Avengers Team

Following news of Marvel’s first Muslim superheroine and the reimagining of Thor as a woman comes the announcement of an all-female Avengers team.

“She-Hulk, Dazzler, Medusa, Nico Minoru, and other fan favorites will take charge,” said series writer G. Willow Wilson of the upcoming A-Force, who will debut this summer. Wilson also penned the adventures of the new Ms. Marvel, Pakistani-American teen Kamala Khan.

Marvel’s comics have long been inclusive, but gender progress on the big and small screens has only been incremental. The comics company’s best on-screen ambassador is ABC’s “Agent Carter,” which boasts a helluva lead in Hayley Atwell and is executive-produced by female showrunners Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas. Krysten Ritter will star in Netflix’s upcoming “Jessica Jones,” created by Melissa Rosenberg (“Dexter,” “Twilight”). ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” also boasts a female co-showrunner in Maurissa Tancharoen (alongside husband Jed Whedon).

On the film front, Marvel announced a Captain Marvel movie last year after DC earned a great deal of praise for finally developing a Wonder Woman movie — with a female director no less. But keep in mind that the Wonder Woman movie still hasn’t been officially greenlit — all the more reason why we need The A-team.
