Victoria Alonso is set to receive the Hollywood Professional Association’s (HPA) Charles S. Swartz Award, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. The producer and executive vp of production at Marvel Studios is being recognized for her impact on the industry.
As an executive producer, Alonso’s credits include Marvel megahits “Black Panther,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”
Alonso made history last year when she became the first woman to be honored with the Visual Effects Society’s Visionary Award. She is currently working on Brie Larson-starrer “Captain Marvel,” the first female-led Marvel pic. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are directing the story of Carol Danvers.
As THR notes, Alonso is an “important voice in Hollywood as a producer, as a Latina, and as a female senior executive.” Earlier this year she told Bustle that she makes a point of reaching out to women who are following in her footsteps. “I make myself very much available,” she revealed. “If there’s anything I can do in the process to help, I am there. And I don’t say it just to say it. If you call me I will be there.”
“Sometimes you just need someone to walk you through it, who it’s safe to say certain things to,” Alonso explained. “There are some of us that have a lot of experience and some of us with less, and sometimes you just need a safe place where you won’t be judged and you won’t be fired.” She said, “That’s what I’ve been able to do for the women who have come through our doors, to say I’m here and I mean it. And you can call any time. And you can check with them, I’ve done that.”
Discussing the record-breaking success of “Blank Panther,” Alonso observed, “It’s really important for the world to see that superheroes come in all sizes and colors. There are young children who have never seen themselves represented, I think this is what this movie has been able to do for the audience. So I think it’s a triumph.”
The producer launched her career as a PA at Digital Domain. She’ll be presented with the HPA’s honor at the annual HPA Awards, set to take place November 15 in Los Angeles.
