Anthologies are one way the horror genre has experimented with new stories, effects, and themes without the arduous burden of stretching out a good idea or visual into feature length.
As with pretty much all things cinema, though, those anthologies tend to have a lot of dudes in front of and especially behind the camera. Magnet Releasing is thus giving female filmmakers a (torture) room of their own with XX, a collection of four horror shorts, all directed by and starring women.
Contributing to XX will be Mary Harron (I Shot Andy Warhol, American Psycho, The Notorious Bettie Page, The Moth Diaries), Karyn Kusama (Girlfight, Aeon Flux, Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation (2015)), Jennifer Lynch (Boxing Helena, Surveillance, Hisss, Girls! Girls! Girls!, Chained), and Jovanka Vuckovic (the shorts The Captured Bird, Self Portrait, and The Guest).
