Mary J. Blige Will Star in “Power” Spinoff

Blige in "Mudbound": Steve Dietl

Mary J. Blige is adding another credit to her rapidly expanding acting resume. The Grammy-winning singer and Oscar-nominated “Mudbound” actress is set to star in a “Power” spinoff at Starz, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.

Currently in pre-production, “Power Book II: Ghost” “won’t necessarily focus on Omari Hardwick’s James ‘Ghost’ St. Patrick, despite the title,” THR writes. “Power” creator Courtney Kemp revealed that the show will “continue the journey of some of ‘Power’s’ most controversial characters.”

“Power Book II: Ghost” is the first “Power” spinoff to be announced. Others are being planned.

A huge fan of the series, Blige said she’s “so grateful to be a part of it.” She currently stars in Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy.” “Scream” and “How to Get Away with Murder” are among her other recent credits.

“Singers are given roles so easily because they’re singers and I didn’t want that to be why I got roles anymore,” Blige said in 2017. “I don’t want to sing like I did in ‘Rock of Ages,’ I want to work hard and just kind of lose myself in it.”

Starz’s most-watched show, “Power” tells the story of drug kingpin James “Ghost” St. Patrick and his attempts to go legit. The crime drama’s sixth and final season will premiere August 25.

Kemp signed a huge development and production deal with Starz’s parent company, Lionsgate, last year.
