Mary Pickford Foundation and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Honor Mary Pickford

The Mary Pickford Foundation and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have teamed up to launch a multi-year partnership to honor the legacy of Mary Pickford. Pickford, who was one of the founding members of the Academy and a co-founder of United Artists, also was one of the most famous actresses of the silent film era.

This new partnership, which kicks off on September 11, includes an annual film screening alongside silent film preservation initiatives and digitization of materials from the Academy’s Mary Pickford Collection. To celebrate the partnership, a special “Inside the Vaults” event will be held at the Pickford Center in Hollywood, where a screening of a newly restored “Mask of Zorro” (1920) will be shown alongside a rare Pickford short “The New York Hat” (1912). The event will also include a tour of the vaults and a display of items from the Mary Pickford Collection.

Academy CEO Dawn Hudson said:

We are thrilled that together with the Mary Pickford Foundation, we will bring the groundbreaking work of Mary Pickford and the pioneers of the silent film era to the attention of a new generation. She was a founding member of the Academy as well as a film visionary, hands-on philanthropist, business leader and educator.
