Mati Diop’s “Atlantics” Is Senegal’s Pick for International Feature Film Oscar Race

"Atlantics": Netflix

Mati Diop made history at Cannes and now she’s joining the Oscar race. A press release announced that Senegal has selected her feature debut, “Atlantics,” as the country’s submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2020 Academy Awards.

Penned by Diop and Olivier Demangel, “Atlantics” “initially follows the blossoming love between young construction worker Souleiman (Ibrahima Traoré), who’s being exploited by his rich boss, and Ada (Mama Sané), about to enter into an unwanted arranged marriage with a wealthier man,” the film’s synopsis details. “Souleiman and his fed-up coworkers soon disappear during an attempt to migrate to Spain in a pirogue, yet somehow his presence is still quite literally felt in Dakar.”

The drama premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it made history as the first feature directed by a black woman to screen in Competition. “Atlantics” took home the Grand Prix. The film later screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Diop received the inaugural Mary Pickford Award, recognizing emerging female talent. You can catch its U.S. debut at the New York Film Festival next week.

Netflix will release “Atlantics” in select theaters November 15 and it will begin streaming November 29.

Other features in the running for the International Feature Film Oscar include Sahraa Karimi’s “Hava, Maryam, Ayesha,” a drama that tells the story of three Afghan women from different social backgrounds living in Kabul, and Lila Avilés’ “The Chambermaid,” a portrait of a maid working in a luxurious hotel in Mexico City. The former is representing Afghanistan and the latter Mexico.
