A TV adaptation of the 1974 cult classic “Foxy Brown” is in the works, Deadline reports. While Pam Grier originally played the iconic role, Meagan Good (“Think Like a Man,” “Deception”) will take the reins in the reboot from MGM TV. After a “competitive situation,” the project was secured by Hulu for development. Good is among the producers working on the adaptation.
Written and directed by Jack Hill, the film version of “Foxy Brown” followed its titular character “as she sought revenge for the murder of her boyfriend by a drug syndicate,” Deadline writes. The box office success “has had a lasting legacy, influencing a number of movies over the past four decades, including the Pam Greer starrer ‘Jackie Brown’; the ‘Urban Legend’ franchise; ‘Austin Power in Goldmember’, which featured a Foxxy Cleopatra character played by Beyonce; and the ‘Undercover Brother’ comedy.”
“The 1970s was a time of freedom and women saying that they needed empowerment,” Grier has said. “There was more empowerment and self-discovery than any other decade I remember. All across the country, a lot of women were Foxy Brown…. They were independent, fighting to save their families not accepting rape or being victimized,” she observed. “This was going on all across the country. I just happened to do it on film. I don’t think it took any great genius or great imagination. I just exemplified it, reflecting it to society.”
The modern re-eimagining of this powerful, empowered female character is being penned by two men: Malcolm Spellman (“Empire”) and Ben Watkins (“Hand of God”), both of whom will serve as showrunners. Hopefully many women are brought on board for the writers’ room and Hulu prioritizes hiring women to direct.
