Megan McDonnell is writing the next chapter of Carol Danvers’ epic journey, taking Brie Larson “higher, further, faster” than ever before. Already part of the Marvel family, the “WandaVision” scribe has been tapped to pen “Captain Marvel 2.” The Hollywood Reporter broke the news.
“Captain Marvel” was released in 2019. Set in 1995, the comic adaptation tells the story of Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel (Larson), a warrior caught in the center of an intergalactic battle.
The pic marked the first female-led film in the Marvel franchise, and the first to be helmed by a woman. Anna Boden co-directed the box office smash with Ryan Fleck. “Captain Marvel” made history as the highest grossing live-action film directed by a woman, taking in over $1.128 billion worldwide. It was the fifth highest-grossing film of 2019 in the U.S. and worldwide.
Boden and Fleck are not expected to return for the sequel, “but are in talks to remain in the Marvel Universe and direct a possible Disney+ series,” THR notes. “Marvel is hoping to find a female filmmaker for ‘Captain Marvel 2’ and is eyeing a potential 2022 release.”
We’d rather hear that Marvel is “planning” to hire a female filmmaker than “hoping to find” one — they certainly won’t have to look far. Many women directors would jump at this chance, and we hope that we’re past the days where studios can pretend that there are no women directors ready and able to step behind the camera for big-budget, high-profile projects.
When we asked Boden what advice she’d give other female filmmakers, she said, “I guess the first thing that comes to mind would go for any director, which is to try to be yourselves as directors — whether you’re in the room with a potential financier or on set with your actors. Sometimes there can be the tendency to imagine the qualities that a director is supposed to possess and try to act in the way that perfect director would act, but I always find people respond to me best when I put away those ideas of who I should be and start embracing who I am, complete with all my strengths as well as my vulnerabilities.”
Boden, Fleck, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet wrote the script for “Captain Marvel.”
As for what to expect in “Captain Marvel 2,” all we know is that it will take place in the present day. No further plot details have been released.
