Megan Mylan’s Doc Portrait of Syrian Families, “Simple as Water,” Acquired by HBO

"Simple as Water"

Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Megan Mylan has a new film on the way. HBO Documentary Films landed worldwide and streaming rights to “Simple as Water,” an exploration of the bonds between parents and children, with plans to debut the feature this fall. A press release announced the news.

“A masterful look at the impact of war, separation, and displacement, the film takes audiences into Syrian families’ quests for normalcy and through the whirlwind of obstacles — to building life anew. Filmed over the course of five years in five countries including Turkey, Greece, Germany, Syria, and the US, Mylan’s sensitive camera reifies the universal importance of family,” the doc’s synopsis details.

The film’s crew included a number of Syrian refugees.

“I think of ‘Simple as Water’ as a family love story celebrating the elemental bonds between parent and child. How do you preserve your child’s right to joy and to move slowly out of innocence when the very basics of having your family safe and together are ripped away? I’m grateful for the trust and collaboration of the families in the film and to our wonderfully diverse crew from all over the world who came together to craft these family portraits,” said Mylan. “We are thrilled to have HBO bringing this story out into the world with their passion and dynamism. I can’t imagine a better home.”

Mylan won an Oscar for her 2008 short doc “Smile Pinki.” She made her directorial debut with 2003 feature doc “Lost Boys of Sudan.”

“Simple as Water” made its world premiere at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival. It will have a limited theatrical run before debuting on HBO later this year and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
