Megan Park’s feature directorial debut has taken home the top prize at SXSW 2021. The fest, which was virtual this year due to COVID-19, named “The Fallout” as the winner of its grand jury award in the narrative feature competition.
Written by Park, “The Fallout” tells the story of a teenage girl (Jenna Ortega, “You”) struggling to heal in the aftermath of a school shooting.
“I sat down to write the film after almost a year of wanting to talk about the subject of school shootings. I was upset and enraged and really scared. I knew I didn’t want to make a movie that would ever incite more violence or be triggering to anyone who had been through this experience — I felt a huge responsibility to do it justice but to also make it really honest,” Park told us. “I also felt that if I was a teenager right now, I’d be terrified to go to school every day. I wanted to tell that side of the story.”
Also an actress, Park is best known for her on-screen work in “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.”
“I’m Fine (Thanks for Asking)” writers and directors Kelley Kali and Angelique Molina received Special Jury Recognition for Multi-Hyphenate Storyteller. Their film follows a recently widowed woman who becomes houseless and convinces her eight-year-old daughter they are camping for fun while she tries to get them off of the streets.
Rachel Fleit was honored with Special Jury Recognition for Exceptional Intimacy in Storytelling in the documentary feature competition for “Introducing, Selma Blair,” a portrait of the “Legally Blonde” actress in the wake of her Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis.
