Melissa McCarthy and the Definition of Success

nullThis Sunday, The New York Times did a wonderful profile of Melissa McCarthy.  She’s been well on her way to superstardom since her breakout performance in Bridesmaids. McCarthy is currently co-directing and starring in Tammy, a film that she co-wrote with her husband/writing partner Ben Falcone.

And next week, The Heat, McCarthy’s buddy cop comedy with Sandra Bullock will hit theaters. McCarthy accurately comments on the film and the lack of women in the summer saying “you don’t really see lady-times taking on the summer schedule.” Trust us, those lady times are going to be worth every penny you spend at the theater.

In the profile, McCarthy also mentions other interesting things, most notably that her character in Identity Thief was originally supposed to be a man (they changed it for her), and how she freaked out about working with Jane Curtin in The Heat.

We were also glad to see that McCarthy took the moment to comment on when Rex Reed body-shamed her when The Identity Thief came out.  It is important for women with power to not let these moments pass by unresponded to.

Here’s what she said about Reed:

I felt really bad for someone who is swimming in so much hate. I just thought, that’s someone who’s in a really bad spot, and I am in such a happy spot. I
laugh my head off every day with my husband and my kids who are mooning me and singing me songs.

On knowing that fame is fleeting:

[This could be the] only time to really pick things that I 100 percent connect with.

On looking forward to playing old lady parts:

I’ve been trying to play old-lady parts since I was in my 20s, so I look forward to all of that.

We will be happy to watch Melissa McCarthy making us laugh as she ages onscreen over the next 30 years.
