Melissa McCarthy truly is the boss.
The Hollywood Reporter has announced that McCarthy and her husband and frequent collaborator, Ben Falcone, are teaming up for another film called “Life of the Party.” The project has been picked up by New Line. McCarthy and Falcone will write and produce the project, presumably with McCarthy starring. Falcone will direct. The duo collaborated on 2014’s “Tammy — both wrote the script, Falcone directed — which had a $19 million budget and grossed over $100 million worldwide.
Details for “Life of the Party” are scarce, but THR reports that “the film has been described as being akin in tone to the Rodney Dangerfield hit ‘Back to School’ and pitched as a broad comedy playing on McCarthy’s strengths.”
This announcement came after McCarthy’s latest comedy, “The Boss,” which opened on Friday, had a boss of a weekend at the box office. The Falcone-helmed comedy edged out “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” with an estimated $23.48 million, just above the superhero flick, which is now in it’s third week and was bumped to second place at $23.44 million for the weekend. “The Boss” marks McCarthy’s third number one opening, after 2013’s “Identify Thief” ($34.6 million) and 2015’s “Spy” ($29 million).
Elsewhere on the weekend’s top 10, women are still doing well. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” is still going strong in fourth place with a total of $43.6 million, Shailene Woodley’s YA adaptation “Allegiant” is at number eight with $61.8 million and the Helen Mirren-starring military drama “Eye in the Sky” slides in at number 10 with $10.4 million.
