Merritt Wever to Topline Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Vicky Jones HBO Pilot “Run”

Hot off her Emmy win for “Godless” comes word that Merritt Wever will topline “Run,” an upcoming HBO pilot hailing from “Fleabag” creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Variety confirmed the casting news.

Wever will play Ruby, a family woman underwhelmed by her humdrum existence. The opportunity to start life anew presents itself when Ruby’s former lover contacts her in the hopes that she’ll make good on an old promise: the exes once agreed that they’d disappear together if either texted the word “run.” Described as functioning “like clockwork,” Ruby feels like a fraud, and “having packed away her younger self for the sake of other people, she is finally taking steps to reinvent her path,” the source summarizes.

Waller-Bridge will co-star in the project and is among its exec producers. Her frequent collaborator and “Killing Eve” writer Vicky Jones will pen the script. She directed the award-winning stage version of Waller-Bridge’s “Fleabag,” which preceded the Amazon series about a self-destructive cafe owner dealing with the aftermath of a tragedy.

Wever took home the trophy for supporting actress in a limited series at last month’s Emmys for Netflix’s  “Godless,” which saw her playing a matriarchal leader in a frontier town. She previously won an Emmy for Edie Falco-starrer “Nurse Jackie.” “The Walking Dead” and “New Girl” are among her other credits. Wever’s upcoming projects include “Unbelievable,” a Netflix limited series dealing with sexual assault, and “Welcome to Marwen,” a drama about a victim of an attack on an unconventional road to recovery.
