Meryl Streep is saying goodbye to “Big Little Lies” and hello to yet another statuette. Just days after the Season 2 finale of “Big Little Lies” comes word that Streep will receive the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Tribute Actor Award. She’ll accept the honor at TIFF’s Tribute Gala awards event, set to take place September 9. A press release confirmed the news.
“The Laundromat,” Steep’s latest film, is set to premiere at TIFF. The drama centers on journalists who discover millions of files linking powerful political figures to a tax evasion scheme.
Streep took home Academy Awards for her roles in “Kramer vs. Kramer,” “Sophie’s Choice,” and “The Iron Lady.” Her 2018 nod for “The Post” marked her 21st nomination.
“Meryl Streep is undoubtedly one of the most talented and versatile actors of her generation,” said Joana Vicente, Co-Heads of TIFF. “Her tremendous contribution to cinema, television, and the stage spans five decades; from her early roles in ‘The Deer Hunter,’ ‘Kramer vs. Kramer,’ ‘Sophie’s Choice’ to later films including ‘The Devil Wears Prada,’ ‘The Iron Lady,’ and ‘The Post,’ she has portrayed characters that are as compelling as they are timeless. TIFF could not be more thrilled to honor such a skilled and exemplary artist.”
Now celebrating its 44th edition, TIFF runs from September 5-15. Titles set to make their world premiere at the fest include Kasi Lemmons’ Harriet Tubman biopic, “Harriet,” and Marielle Heller’s “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” a look inside a journalist’s life-changing friendship with Mister Rogers. Fifty percent of the fest’s Galas — its most prestigious, high-profile program — are women-directed.
