Mia Hansen-Løve’s “Bergman Island” Acquired by IFC Films

"Bergman Island"

Mia Hansen-Løve’s English-language debut has secured U.S. distribution ahead of its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival. Deadline reports that IFC Films snagged rights to Vicky Krieps-starrer “Bergman Island.”

Written by Hansen-Løve, the film follows Chris (Krieps) and Tony (Tim Roth), American filmmakers who travel to the island Fårö for the summer in the hopes that living amidst the “wild beauty of the landscape where Ingmar Bergman lived and filmed his most acclaimed works” will help them “find inspiration for their upcoming films,” the source summarizes. “As days spent separately from Tony pass by, Chris’s fascination with the island grows, and memories of her first love come to the surface. Lines between reality and fiction then begin to blur, and tear the couple further apart.”

Mia Wasikowska (“Jane Eyre”) co-stars.

IFC Films President Arianna Bocco praised the film’s “brilliantly layered screenplay” and “amazing cast,” describing “Bergman Island” as “a major work from one of the most exciting auteurs working today.”

Hansen-Løve won the Silver Bear for best director at the 2016 Berlinale for “Things to Come.” “Maya,” “Eden,” and “Goodbye First Love” are among her other features.

Krieps’ credits include “Phantom Thread” and “Hanna.”

“Bergman Island” is one of just four women-directed offerings screening in Competition at Cannes this year. The fest will take place in-person July 6-17.
