Congratulations are in order for Michaela Coel, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Radha Blank. The multi-hyphenates are among this year’s NAACP Image Award winners. “The 2021 NAACP Image Awards is announcing this year’s winners across more than 60 categories in streaming presentations across five nights ahead of the awards’ live show on BET and CBS on Saturday night,” The Hollywood Reporter details.
Tuesday, Night Two of the event, saw Coel receiving the award for best writing in a comedy series for “I May Destroy You,” her semi auto-biographical story about a London-based writer dealing with trauma in the aftermath of sexual assault. Prince-Bythewood scored the honor for best director for “The Old Guard,” her hit Netflix pic about a covert group of mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die. Blank took the prize for best writing in a motion picture for “The Forty-Year-Old Version,” her comedy about a struggling New York playwright who decides to reinvent herself as a rapper.
Other winners from Night Two included Attica Locke and Hanelle Culpepper. The former was recognized for drama series writing for Kerry Washington-starrer “Little Fires Everywhere” and the latter for directing in a drama series for “Star Trek: Picard.”
Dawn Porter was among Night One’s winners. “John Lewis: Good Trouble,” her tribute to the late civil rights activist and politician, won the award for best documentary (film).
“The virtual, non-televised presentations will continue through Friday before the live show airs on BET and across ViacomCBS’ networks including CBS, VH1, and MTV on Saturday, March 27 at 8 p.m.,” THR notes.
