“Change is the essential process of all existence,” Spock once said. It looks like Captain/Emperor Philippa Georgiou may take his advice and forge a new path. Michelle Yeoh is in talks to lead a “Star Trek” spinoff on CBS All Access following her “Discovery” character, Deadline reports.
Already signed on to reprise her role as Philippa for “Star Trek: Discovery’s” second season on the streamer, Yeoh’s packed schedule is said to be a major factor in whether the project will move forward. If it does, it’s likely “to focus on a continuation of her ‘Discovery’ Season 2 adventures in Starfleet’s Section 31 division. The semi-secret and autonomous organization has been a part of ‘Trek’ lore since it was first introduced in the 1990s on the ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’ series,” the source explains.
Yeoh is hot off her success from “Crazy Rich Asians,” which grossed over $235 million worldwide. The rom-com centers on an Asian-American woman (Constance Wu) who travels to Singapore as her long-term boyfriend’s (Henry Golding) date for a wedding. She’s shocked to discover he’s crazy rich — so much so that his family is compared to royalty. Yeoh plays his disapproving mother. A sequel is being developed with Yeoh reprising her role as Eleanor. She’s said that she would like future installments of the franchise to explore Hong Kong and China.
“Crazy Rich Asians” follows another huge box office win in Yeoh’s filmography. She portrayed Aleta Ogord in 2017’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” which raked in more than $863 million globally.
“Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” and “Tomorrow Never Dies” are among Yeoh’s other credits. Season 2 of “Star Trek: Discovery” premieres January 17.
