Mindy Kaling Working on “Four Weddings and a Funeral” Anthology Series at Hulu

Kaling in “The Mindy Project”

“The Mindy Project” has borrowed, celebrated, and skewered conventions of rom-coms throughout its six-season run, so it comes as no surprise that the show’s creator and star has signed on to bring one of the most beloved films of the genre to the small screen. Rom-com super fan Mindy Kaling is set to executive produce and co-write an hourlong anthology series inspired by “Four Weddings and a Funeral” for Hulu, Deadline writes.

Co-penned by “Mindy Project” EP and writer Matt Warburton, the show will follow “a group of friends as their lives intersect through these five events, with each season following a different story arc,” the source writes. “It is still early in the process, but I hear there is an idea to have different characters in a different location each season, with the lead possibly remaining the same.”

Hulu is expected to make a decision about whether or not to offer the project a straight-to-series order by early next year.

Released in 1994, the original “Four Weddings and a Funeral” stars Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell.

In her 2011 book “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)” Kaling wrote that “the genre has been so degraded in the past 20 years that saying you like romantic comedies is essentially an admission of mild stupidity.” She explained, “I simply regard romantic comedies as a subgenre of sci-fi, in which the world created therein has different rules than my regular human world.”

“The Mindy Project’s” sixth and final season will conclude on Hulu November 14. Kaling stars in two of 2018’s most anticipated films: Ava DuVernay’s adaptation Madeleine L’Engle’s classic sci-fi novel “A Wrinkle in Time” and “Ocean’s Eight,” the all-female, star-studded reboot of the “Ocean’s Eleven” franchise. Her packed slate also includes “Late Night,” a comedy she co-wrote about a late-night host co-starring Emma Thompson with Nisha Ganatra (“Transparent,” “Better Things”) on board to direct.
