Miranda July’s “Kajillionaire” Acquired by Focus Features

"Kajillionaire": Matt Kennedy/ Sundance Institute

Focus Features has acquired worldwide rights to Miranda July’s latest hot off its premiere at Sundance Film Festival, where the con-artist comedy was met with positive reviews. A press release confirmed the deal for “Kajillionaire.”

Penned by July, the pic tells the story of “low-stakes grifters.” Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood) and her parents (Debra Winger, Richard Jenkins) “invite a chipper young woman (Gina Rodriguez) into their insular clan, only to have their entire world turned upside down.”

Focus Features will distribute “Kajillionaire” in the U.S. and Universal Pictures International will distribute internationally.

Focus chairman Peter Kujawski said, “As cinema goers are ever more hungry for truly original experiences, it’s hard to imagine a more unique voice than Miranda’s. Her heightened worlds are full of humor, heartbreak, and humanity, and ‘Kajillionaire’ doses those out in abundance,” he emphasized.

July made her feature directorial debut with 2005’s “Me and You and Everyone We Know,” which took home the Camera d’Or at Cannes and a Special Jury Prize at Sundance. She also penned the script and starred in the romance about a performance artist and shoe salesman. July’s next feature, 2011’s “The Future,” told the story of a couple whose lives are upended by the prospect of adopting a stray cat.

Also a well-known writer and artist, July’s books include “The First Bad Man” and “No One Belongs Here More Than You.”

Wood voices Queen Iduna in “Frozen II,” in theaters now. She stars in sci-fi Western “Westworld,” which will kick off its third season on HBO March 15. She’s received two Emmy nods for “Westworld” and one for “Mildred Pierce.”

Best known for her Golden Globe-winning lead role on “Jane the Virgin,” Rodriguez’s other credits include “Someone Great,” “Miss Bala,” and “Annihilation.”

A three-time Oscar nominee, Winger scored nods for “Shadowland,” “Terms of Endearment,” and “An Officer and a Gentleman.” More recently she was seen in Netflix comedy “The Ranch.”
