Misty Copeland to Star in Reality Show on Oxygen

Misty Copeland is bringing her talent to the masses.

Usually seen at work only in rarefied halls like the American Ballet Theatre, Copeland has been increasing her visibility off the stage in recent years, most notably in fashion ads and a new memoir that debuted this past spring (which will soon be turned into a movie).

But now it’ll be easier than ever to see the ballet prodigy’s renowned gifts, thanks to an upcoming reality show. Oxygen is developing The Misty Copeland Project (working title), which will find the 32-year-old dancer holding a master class for the next generation of ballet stars.

Copeland’s enormous popularity — how many other ballet dancers can boast an endorsement deal with Under Armour? — can be attributed to her status as a role model par excellence. Hopefully the wider reach of her new show will inspire younger girls, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds like the one Copeland came from, to reach higher.

Here is Oxygen’s description of the show:

The Misty Copeland Project (working title)

Produced by Sirens Media, with Rebecca Toth Diefenbach, Valerie Haselton and Copeland serving as executive producers.

As talented hopefuls from diverse backgrounds descend upon New York to take on the next major step in their ballet careers, who better to train and mentor them than Copeland — the renowned ballerina who herself has defied all odds and shattered boundaries by overcoming the cultural pressures of professional ballet. Copeland, who began taking ballet lessons on the basketball court of a Boys & Girls Club at age 13 and was considered a prodigy, made history by becoming the second African-American female soloist in the prestigious American Ballet Theatre. With the opportunity of a lifetime and chance to catapult to the top of the ballet world, these aspiring dancers’ passion, commitment and hard work will be center stage in Misty’s Master Class.
