Outfest is celebrating the mother of all house mothers. Mj Rodriguez — who portrays Blanca, mother of the House of Evangelista, on “Pose” — will be honored with the Individual Trailblazer prize at Sunday’s Outfest Legacy Awards Gala.
To be held October 27 in Los Angeles, the Legacy Awards helps raise funds for Outfest’s filmmaking courses, screenwriting labs, leadership training, workshops, and more. “Vida” creator Tanya Saracho is among the ceremony’s other honorees.
“’Pose’ came into living rooms across America as a radical idea, but what quickly became apparent in Mj Rodriguez’s Blanca is we all know her. We have that friend on the block who sticks up for the underdog, that mom we know fighting for a better world for herself and her family, and that piece inside of ourselves which faces the adversity of each day with bravery to try to make it,” said Damien S. Navarro, Outfest Executive Director. “That is what empathy does — we can see ourselves and understand our commonality with others. That is what makes performances and shows like the ones we are honoring at Legacy Awards Gala so vital to our humanity, particularly given the debates that are happening nationally with regards to our rights.”
As a press release describes, Rodriguez is “the heart and soul” of “Pose.” Set in New York’s ballroom scene in the ’80s and ’90s, and during the AIDS crisis, the drama follows the interconnected lives of its participants, most of whom are queer people of color. Blanca is compassionate and caring, brave and determined. She loves nothing more than her community, and will do whatever she can to strengthen it.
Rodriguez’s other screen credits include “Nurse Jackie,” “Luke Cage,” “Saturday Church,” and “Gema.” She’s currently starring in Pasadena Playhouse’s production of “Little Shop of Horrors.”
“Pose” wrapped up its second season in August, and has been renewed for a third. The premiere date is TBD.
