The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is working toward “a brighter, more inclusive future in which cinema can more accurately reflect the world around us,” according to a press release. With that aim in mind, they’re teaming up with The Future of Film is Female. Originally launched as a funding program for women developing shorts, the initiative has expanded its mission and is joining forces with MoMA to highlight contemporary films directed by women early in their careers “in an effort to have their voices represented and respected on equal footing with their male counterparts.”
The two-year, seasonal series will kick off with films by Shirin Neshat, Gillian Robespierre, Maysaloun Hamoud, Coralie Fargeat, and Erin Lee Carr as well as a a special shorts program from the NoBudge movie club and short film screenings before each feature.
Among the titles screening are Fargeat’s “Revenge,” a subversive, feminist take on the revenge thriller, and Hamoud’s “In Between,” a portrait of three Palestinian women sharing an apartment in Tel Aviv.
The first film series runs from July 26-August 2. MoMa promises that “subsequent seasons will reflect and respond to changes in filmmaking, financing, and exhibition, in addition to broader societal challenges,” but how that will reflect the programming remains to be seen.
