Motherhood and Martyrdom: June 2016’s Crowdfunding Picks

“Out of the Box”

Women content creators touch on some heavy topics in this month’s crowdfunding picks. From a web series about the underbelly of motherhood, to the reconsideration of the martyrdom of a patron saint, this month’s projects need your help to address issues that matter to women.

“She Is…” is a documentary about the power of dance for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual abuse. Director Zuzana Lova will provide inside access to the world of sex trafficking and the ways that dance helps its survivors.

“The Calendar” is a short film about a comic book artist and the injured vet who re-enters her life. This story ruminates on the connection between memory and identity.

“Out of the Box” is a web series that seeks to quell anxieties caused by produced images of “perfect moms.” The duo behind this project will create short videos that dispel the myth that moms should always have it together.

Also considering the implications of prevalent beliefs is the documentary about Saint Agatha of Catania, “Devoti Tutti.” The film will consider the backstory of the Saint from a female perspective.

Here are June’s women-helmed crowdfunding picks:

“Out of the Box “— Directed by Sammi Cohen, Written by Rose Rossi and Kristin Malko

“Out of the Box” will be a collection of 2–3 minute videos that “show how impossible it is to live up to the superwoman status,” images perpetuated by media. College buddies Rose Rossi and Kristin Malko want to use humor to show the full range of motherhood — i.e. the “good, bad, and ugly.” The project seeks to give mothers something they can relate to, in small increments that fit the schedule of a busy mom. You can help bring this series to life by donating through its Kickstarter page.

“Devoti Tutti” (Documentary) — Directed by Bernadette Wegenstein

This feature-length documentary explores the narrative of an Italian patron saint, known primarily for having been tortured and had her breasts removed. Her sacrifice is celebrated in Catania, a city in eastern Sicily, but this documentary filmmaker wants to consider Saint Agatha’s legacy from a female perspective. While pointing out that the narrative behind this saint has mostly been canonized by men, Bernadette Wegenstein explains the need to delve deeper into a story that says Saint Agatha took pleasure in her torture . She also addresses why it was that her breasts were removed. “Devoti Tutti” considers this choice and more, and you can help by supporting the project on its Seed and Spark page.

“She Is…” (Documentary) — Directed by Zuzana Lova

She-Is is a Los Angeles based non-profit that provides a safe space for survivors of sex-trafficking to empower themselves and one another through dance. The documentary, “She Is…” will explore the power of dance in the healing process for survivors — and give further perspective on the sex-trafficking epidemic. The documentary will follow the She-Is team and their work to help survivors of sexual abuse. Help this project achieve its mission by giving here, at Indiegogo.

The Calendar — Written by Jeanette Dilone

“The Calendar” is a veteran’s story told from a veteran’s point of view. The story follows a comic book artist, who is inspired to follow her dreams by a vet who suffers from a traumatic brain injury. When they reconnect, she discovers that he is no longer the man she thought he was. This short film needs your help for production, and you can be part of it here, on its Indiegogo page.
