movieScope Launches Women in Film Issue

nullIn super cool news, movieScope, a magazine looking at the film industry, has launched their inaugural Women in Film issue.

The 64 page, March/April 2013 issue will look at women working in all aspects of the industry–in both international film and television. Beyond the focus on women in the industry–which includes writers, producers, directors, etc., all of the contributors to the issue are women as well.

Some highlights include interviews with Gale Anne Hurd (a recipient of this year’s Laura Ziskin award at the Athena Film Festival), Olivia Colman and Madeline Di Nonno of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender and Media. There are also profiles of women filmmakers in the Middle East and female film critics discussing the female gaze and its importance.

movieScope’s editor Nikki Baughan commented on the importance of the issue.

It’s an absolute fact that women are widely under-represented
throughout our industry.  Instead of
accusing festivals and awards of sexism, we must acknowledge that such events
merely hold a mirror up to the huge gender gap that exists in our field, and work
together to change this disparity. In deciding to devote an entire issue to the
achievements of some truly inspirational women, we hope that a new generation
of young women will see first hand that a successful career in film is
something that is entirely within their grasp. We all – film professionals and
audience alike – stand to benefit from an industry that’s packed full of
diverse voices and opinions.
