Looks like we could soon be hearing more ABBA on Broadway. “Muriel’s Wedding,” the 1994 Australian comedy starring Toni Collette, is heading to the stage in Sydney.
As Yahoo! News reports via THR, Global Creatures will join forces with the Sydney Theatre Company for a 2017 premiere. The new production will include original music from Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall and will be joined by some of the beloved ABBA hits from the film.
The musical will retain the original story though make a few changes, focusing on “Muriel Heslop, the ABBA-loving romantic who dreams of the perfect wedding, despite never having gone on a date. The musical’s book will be updated, as the show description notes that the titular, Sydney-bound heroine ends up with everything she ever wanted — a man, a fortune and a million Twitter followers. That’s when things start to go really wrong.”
If the show is a success and heads to the U.S. for a Broadway run, that would mean another Broadway show featuring ABBA tunes. The hit ABBA jukebox musical “Mamma Mia” closed last fall.
For Australians, the film has become one of the most beloved of all time, and a stage production has been in the works for a few years.
“It’s been a great passion of his (writer-director P.J. Hogan’s) for a number of years to bring his show to the stage and we’re thrilled to be partnering with Global Creatures, to be bringing it to our audiences,” the STC interim artistic director told Australian News.
The new production will play November 6 through December 30, 2017 at Sydney’s Roslyn Packer Theatre.
