“My Salinger Year,” the story of Joanna Rakoff’s experiences working for J. D. Salinger’s agent in the ’90s, has secured distribution. IFC Films has acquired the U.S. rights to the drama starring Sigourney Weaver and Margaret Qualley, Variety reports.
Based on Rakoff’s memoir, “My Salinger Year” sees Joanna (Qualley) leaving grad school, pursuing her writing dreams, and taking a job as an assistant to “Weaver’s stoic and old-fashioned literary agent.”
The source synopsizes, “The assistant spends her days in a plush office where dictaphones and typewriters still reign and her nights in a sink-less Brooklyn apartment with her socialist boyfriend. Her main task is processing Salinger’s fan mail, but as she reads the heart-wrenching letters from around the world, she becomes reluctant to send the agency’s impersonal standard letter and impulsively begins personalizing the responses.”
No word on when we can expect “My Salinger Year.”
Written and directed by Philippe Falardeau, the film premiered earlier this year at the Berlinale. The pic hails from micro_scope, Parallel Films, Memento Films International, and La Cinéfacture.
Arianna Bocco, IFC’s executive VP of acquisitions and productions, described “My Salinger Year” as an “authentic New York story brought to life by excellent performances.”
A three-time Oscar nominee, Weaver was recognized for her work in “Aliens,” “Working Girl,” and “Gorillas in the Mist.” She took home a BAFTA for her supporting turn in “The Ice Storm.” Her more recent credits include “Doc Martin,” “The Defenders,” and “The Meyerowitz Stories.”
Qualley received an Emmy nod for her portrayal of dancer Ann Reinking in “Fosse/Verdon.” She was last seen in “Seberg,” the Kristen Stewart-starring biopic of French New Wave star Jean Seberg. “Novitiate,” “The Leftovers,” and “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” are among Qualley’s other credits.
