“Fresh Off the Boat” is coming to an end, but creator Nahnatchka Khan has another project in the works at ABC. She and “Speechless” writer-producer Niki Schwartz-Wright are collaborating on family comedy “Valley Trash.” According to Deadline, ABC has given the project a put pilot commitment.
“Valley Trash” is written by Schwartz-Wright and hails from Universal TV, where Khan and her Fierce Baby Productions are under an overall deal. Both women are executive producing.
The project centers on a working-class 14-year-old, Abby, who is accepted to a prestigious private Los Angeles high school. “Neither she nor her hard-working, financially strapped parents are prepared for the culture shock they’re about to experience when Abby is thrust into a world occupied by a bunch of brilliant, snobby, rich kids who want nothing to do with her, her family, or their 818 area code,” Deadline teases.
Schwartz-Wright most recently served as a writer and co-executive producer on NBC’s ensemble comedy, “Abby’s,” the first broadcast TV program led by a Cuban woman. The sitcom, set in the titular bar, ran for one season before getting cancelled earlier this year. “The Office,” “The Goldbergs,” and “The Grinder” are among Schwartz-Wright’s other credits. She previously had a comedy, “Exes in Law,” in development at NBC and Universal TV.
“Fresh Off the Boat,” the longest-running sitcom centered on an Asian-American family, will end after its current sixth season. Khan also created “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23,” which ran for two seasons, from 2012-2013, on ABC. Per Deadline, she and “Fresh Off the Boat” writer-producer Erica Oyama are working on a comedy, “Outer Beauty,” for NBC. Khan recently signed on to direct “Showboat,” a feature comedy set in the world of cruise entertainment she co-wrote. She made her feature directorial debut earlier this year with Netflix’s hit rom-com “Always Be My Maybe.”
